ØYVIND VÅGNES

Postdoctoral Fellow 

Øyvind Vågnes (PhD 2007), presently affiliated with the research project The Power of the Precarious Aesthetic, is a co-founding member of the Nomadikon research group. Zaprudered: The Kennedy Assassination Film in Visual Culture (University of Texas Press, 2011) received honorable mention at the American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Awards, and won the Peter C. Rollins Book Award. Author of an extensive range of publications in international and national anthologies and journals in recent years, he is also the editor of anthologies and one of the two founding editors of Ekfrase: Nordisk Tidsskrift for Visuell Kultur (Universitetsforlaget). A book-length study of non-fiction graphic novels in Norwegian, Den dokumentariske teikneserien, was published in 2014 (Universitetsforlaget). Recent and forthcoming publications include: “Lessons from the Life of an Image: Malcolm Browne’s Photograph of Thich Quang Duc’s Self-Immolation”, in Frances Guerin, ed., On Not Looking: The Paradox of Contemporary Visual Culture (Routledge, 2015); "John's Story: Joe Sacco's Depiction of 'Bare Life'", in Daniel Worden, ed., The Comics of Joe Sacco: Journalism in a Visual World (University Press of Mississippi, 2015); "The Unmaking of the World: Trauma and Testimony in Two Stories by Joe Sacco," in "The Aesthetics of Atrocity," a special issue of Afterimage: The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism, Summer 2011; "Inside the Story: A Conversation with Joe Sacco," in Journal of Graphic Novels & Comics Vol. 1, No. 2, December 2010, pp. 193-216; and "Showing Silence: On David Small's Stitches," in Studies in Comics Vol 1, No. 2, 2010, pp. 310-314. He is the author of four novels, the most recent of which is Sone Z (Tiden Norsk Forlag, 2014).
